Dropping Some Maternity Leave Stats

February 19th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Last week, I posted a survey on Above The Law about leave and part-time arrangements. (You can still take it here and see some preliminary results here.)

I’ll be getting deeper into the substance of the results here and there but, for now, here’s a chart of how responses broke down on paid maternity leave.

How many weeks of paid maternity leave will your firm provide?

I am a firm administrator for a law firm. What is not clear from the results above is whether the 12 weeks are outright paid in full by the firms or the 12 weeks are offered to employees with a combination of paid/unpaid time off, using such resources as the firm-paid Short-Term Disability (usually 66.667%), accrued personal/vacation/sick, etc, only a few weeks paid at full pay outright by the firm, etc. Can you clarify?

Hi Jeannie, thanks for your question.

I haven’t been specifically tracking the breakdown for each firm, but the paid maternity leave is usually broken down into two parts: a short-term paid medical leave (usually 6 or 8 weeks), which is covered by insurance, and a paid parental or childcare leave, which is covered by the firm.

The numbers do not include accrued personal, vacation or sick days.
